Student Scholarships

The Tourville '80 Family Risen Christ Scholarship was established in 2019 by AHA alumni Karl Tourville '80 as a way to provide funds for incoming 9th grade students with very high need so they are able to access an AHA education.  Awards are granted with a preference for students who are coming to Holy Angels from Risen Christ school in south Minneapolis. During 2021-22 their are 9 recipients of this scholarship!

The Adams-Andrade Catholic Friendship Scholarship Fund was established by Madonna Adams ‘54 as a way to provide need-based scholarship for girls to attend AHA. The recipient will be a Catholic female student with a preference for a Hispanic student.

The Andrew Gaertner '88 Memorial Scholarship was established by Andy's good friends Charles Musech '88 and Jon Launstein '88 as a way to memorialize their good friend who died in 2006 at the age of 37.  The scholarship supports AHA students who attended a Minneapolis Catholic grade school. Recipients must work hard at their studies and be active in various co-curricular activities offered at AHA. Due to the incredible work of Charles and Jon and many Co-Stars from the late 80s, the award is given to 3-4 students each year.

The Barry DeLude Memorial Scholarship was established by his family to honor Barry, a Minneapolis Fire Fighter who passed away in 2007. The scholarship is awarded to a student who could benefit from the gentle, yet strong guidance available at AHA. Recipient must demonstrate traits of Barry’s sons Jacob ’08 and Mark ‘09 including loyalty, compassion, a sense of service, and a competitive spirit.

The Becky Budworth ‘92 Mary Medal Scholarship was established by Becky’s brother Mike Budworth ’90 in 2021.  It is awarded annually to a young woman of strong character and Catholic faith who exhibits an exceptional work ethic and academic determination despite challenges. The scholarship honors Mike’s sister Rebecca “Becky” Budworth ’92 who was the 1992 Mary Medal winner and who passed away in 2011. The Budworth family is honored when additional donors contribute to this special scholarship.

The Caitlan Barton '06 Memorial Scholarship was established through the heartfelt generosity of her classmates, family, and friends to honor the late Caitlan Barton ‘06. This scholarship provides financial support to four deserving students. Students receiving the scholarship must meet and maintain high standards in academics, leadership, school involvement, service and moral character. Students should also strive to excel in academics, arts and athletics. Be great like Cait! 

Larry Fitzgerald Jr. established the Carol Fitzgerald Scholarship Endowment Fund in honor of his mother who passed away in 2003. Larry attended high school at AHA prior to his exceptional college and NFL football career.

The Carol Fitzgerald Scholarship Endowment Fund will award scholarships to students of color or socio-economically disadvantaged students. Recipients must be eligible for financial assistance from AHA. The award is based upon academic eligibility and promise of the student. Scholarships will be renewable for up to four years.

Students wishing to be considered must be academically eligible to attend AHA and once enrolled maintain a cumulative academic GPA of 2.5 or better. They must participate in at least one sport or activity, during the duration of their enrollment and submit a scholarship application. 

The Catholic Services Appeal Foundation Scholarships are for students whose families demonstrate a very high financial need and would not be able to afford a Catholic high school without significant help. The scholarship is selected through the TADS financial aid process.

The David Anderson Memorial Scholarship was stablished by parents Ed and Christine Hunt Anderson ('71) to honor their son and former AHA student David Anderson. The scholarship is for a student in any class with a strong interest in social justice and who demonstrates heart and compassion for others.   

The Dom and Pat Margarit Scholarship was established by Dom and Pat's children, most of whom graduated from Holy Angels in the 1970s as a way to memorialize and honor their parents who made big sacrifices to send them to Catholic schools. It is awarded to students who exhibit the qualities of loyalty, compassion, a sense of service, and competitive spirit.   

The Douglas J. and Mary Rae Schmelz Scholarship is an endowed fund that provides scholarship support for students who demonstrate financial need and have shown excellent scholastic abilities and high leadership potential

The Excellence in Academics Scholarship Fund is for students in any grade who have a strong grade point average and are excelling in advanced and/or Advanced Placement courses.

The Flaherty Family Foundation Scholarship. The Flaherty Family Foundation (FFF) provides partial scholarship funds to high-potential, high-financial need incoming 9^th grade students. The Flaherty Foundation works in conjunction with area grade school principals and admissions officers to identify 8^th grade candidates who fit their specific academic, leadership and income profile. Students undergo a thorough application process that includes a personal interview. After the Flaherty Scholar begins school at AHA Flaherty staff carefully monitor the academic progress of each scholar and personally holds them accountable to a very high standard through high school graduation and in some cases, beyond.

***Some AHA donors have chosen to become a “Flaherty Co-Sponsor” by financially supporting these scholars for one or more years. Because these scholars normally qualify for a significant amount of help, Flaherty Co-Sponsors are needed to bridge the gap between the amount of financial aid the Flaherty Foundation provides and how much the family can afford to pay. The Florence Florance Scholarship is awarded to hard-working African American students. Ms. Florence is the mother of AHA graduate Catherine Florance Denny '52.

The Fred and Susan Wroge Scholarship was established to provide scholarship funds to a student at AHA. The scholarship is granted initially to a 9th grade girl who is involved in AHA activities or sports. The recipient’s family needs to qualify for need-based financial aid through the AHA financial aid and scholarship office.

The Greg Trebil Memorial Scholarship was established in 2020 by AHA alumni and many of their parents to honor former hockey coach and two-time state champion Greg Trebil who passed away in 2019. The scholarship is given to a boy or a girl who is working hard academically and gives back to their community.

The Guardian Angels Scholarships are awarded to students with very high financial need and/or families who find themselves in a financial crisis and are facing the possibility of having to remove their child from Holy Angels.

The Humboldt & Hoffman Scholarship was established in October of 2020 by the Humboldt and Hoffman family. Two scholarships are awarded to 9^th grade students for 4 years. It is for students who are involved in AHA activities and preferably someone who participates in sports and the arts.

The Jeff Elsen '75 Memorial Scholarship is a combined scholarship organized by the multi-generational Elsen family.  Two $1000 need-based scholarships are given each year to an AHA student who has an interest in theater and/or music. The scholarship committee makes the decisions on the recipients.

The Marcia Black Olsen '56 Memorial Scholarships was established by Marcia’s husband Dr. James Olsen as a way to memorialize and celebrate the remarkable life of Marcia. It is awarded to 3 female AHA students with an interest in French, Psychology, International Relations and/or the Medical Field. Holy Angels staff and teachers assist in identifying the appropriate student.

The Marie E. Owens Scholarship is awarded to a student with extraordinary participation in AHA activities.

The Mary Esther McKay Scholarship was established by granddaughter Emily Hodgson Zellner ’96 and her husband Bjorn Zellner ’96 as a way to honor the legacy of Emily’s grandmother Mary Esther McKay. Mary was a trailblazing leader in the field of business and accounting, and a generous donor- especially to educational causes. This scholarship partners with the Flaherty Foundation and is awarded to a very high-need 9^th grade student. It follows that student through their senior year at AHA.

The Meckey Family Shakopee Area Catholic School Scholarship was established in 2023 by AHA Parents Sam and Amy Meckey (Katie '17, Megan '19 and Jacob '23) as a way to provide scholarship funds for incoming 9th grade students with demonstrated financial need so they are able to obtain an Academy of Holy Angels (AHA) education.

The Award is granted to incoming 9^th grade students and follows the student(s) through their senior year at AHA. Awards are granted with a preference for students who are coming to Holy Angels from Shakopee Area Catholic School (SACS). The recipient should be a hard-working, high-achieving student who volunteers in their community and participates in school related activities. 

In order to qualify for this scholarship a family must apply for financial assistance by December 15, 2023. These $1000 scholarships are in addition to any need-based scholarship or financial aid that a family may qualify for at AHA.  

The NorthStar Scholarship.  Established in 2021, this scholarship provides financial assistance to one high need girl and one boy. The recipients come from a family who have qualified for full financial need and who couldn’t attend without significant help. The recipient should be a hard-working, high-achieving student. The student should be involved in community or school-related service. A bonus would be if the student enjoyed activities, playing sports or soccer specifically.

The Open Arms Scholarship is awarded to a number of hard-working, academically high-achieving 9th grade students.

The Sam Wolfson ’15 Memorial Scholarship was established by Sam's loving family as a way to remember and honor him while providing an AHA education to a deserving student.  The scholarship will be granted to a junior or senior boy or girl who has an interest in science and engineering. 

The Tyler Fey '00 Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to honor the late Tyler Fey ’00 who as a United States Marine was killed by enemy hostile fire in Al Anbar Province, Iraq on April 4, 2004. Tyler’s awards include the Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon, the Iraq Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Award, Expert Rifleman Medal and the Global War on terrorism Medal. The scholarship is awarded to average students who have a strong desire to receive the education that AHA provides and whose parents are committed to supporting them in their efforts.

The William and Alice Lahiff Scholarship is awarded to a student with high academic achievement and performance.
