Academy of Holy Angels comes together as a student body, faculty, and staff in a weekly Convocation assembly. Convocations provide a time and space for AHA to build community, learn, pray, celebrate good news, and listen to new and relevant speakers. During the AHAHybrid learning model, some students attend Convocation in person and others view it online from their homeroom.
This week, AHA students had the opportunity to hear from Mr. Wayne Bugg who is the associate director and store manager of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul - Twin Cities. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul of the Archdiocese of St. Paul & Minneapolis is part of a worldwide organization of lay Catholic men and women who are committed to live and grow in their Christian faith through prayer and personal involvement in charitable works. The Society advocates the concepts of Christian social justice, the rights and dignity of every individual, and the need for equality of opportunity in education and employment.
Mr. Bugg shared his personal story of childhood hardship. After moving to Minneapolis as a teenager at a low point in his life, he crossed paths with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. He shared, "By God's grace, our next door neighbor worked for St. Vincent de Paul. He asked me to come with him to do odd jobs there for $5 an hour. Little did I know it would become a career for me." The Society's employees and volunteers provided Mr. Bugg with the encouragement and support to finish his high school and college education, being the first in his family to do so. That initial connection to St. Vincent de Paul over 20 years ago led to a life-changing experience, and Mr. Bugg has since dedicated his career to helping further their mission. AHA Campus Ministry, student clubs, and athletic teams have served with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul for more than 20 years. In response to the devastating events around Lake Street after the killing of George Floyd, especially the physical damage to the St. Vincent de Paul stores at Lake Street and 12th Avenue, Academy of Holy Angels will be deepening our commitment to the organization. AHA and St. Vincent de Paul share the same core values - love of our dear neighbor.
In the 2020-2021 school year, AHA will dedicate its efforts to the work of the Society, including an upcoming donation drive the week of October 5. As Mr. Bugg said, “Know that these small tokens are transformative...A lot of times, it's these simple acts of love that transform lives."
