Black History Month

Reflections from Principal Foley:

Today at Convocation, we celebrated Black History Month by recognizing the accomplishments and contributions of notable Black Americans. Did you know that the stoplight was invented in 1916 by Garrett Morgan, an African-American inventor, businessman, and community leader; the elevator door by Alexander Miles, an African-American inventor who was best known for being awarded a patent for an automatically opening and closing elevator door design in 1887. This is only a sample of the students' presentation.

Melphis Methenge, Sheillah Methenge, Paul Kariuki, Angel Nyamato, Madi Dillon, Alexis Taylor, and Princess Ofori (pictured above) each contributed information and personal insight and experience about being a black student in America. Their presentation was beautiful, informative, heart-felt, and practiced, polished, and prepared.

Once again this winter, we see our students excel in and out of the classroom. I am very proud of their efforts and very happy for them, as they experience the satisfaction and rewards of their good work.

On February 19, the National Honor Society, Seraphine Chapter, inducted 5 new seniors and 49 juniors to join the 58 senior charter members. Math Stars will send one team to State on March 9, and the Knowledge Bowl will send one team to Regions today. We wish both teams good luck!

Boys and girls basketball are our last winter teams closing their seasons as they begin their section play-offs hoping to both advance to State once again this year.

And, yes, spring sports are just around the corner. Most teams met this week to begin preliminary planning for the seasons. Let's say a prayer that our spring teams enjoy fair skies and a nice, long spring season!

The promise of extra daylight always energizes me this time of year. I, for one, am a fan of daylight savings. The beginning of March welcomes the hope of spring and closes the winter months; and for us at AHA, it ends Trimester II. Final exams are already upon us March 4 and 5.

Enjoy the warm weather that is promised to us this weekend.

Sincerely,
