Academy of Holy Angels offers many sports and activities for our students to be involved. One of those activities is Math STARS. The Math STARS have been around since 1988 and continue to be a growing activity at AHA. The program consists of 40 students and they participate in the Minnesota State High School Mathematics League, which is sponsored by Augsburg University. The League exists to recognize students who have unusual mathematical ability and to encourage them to investigate a study of topics not commonly taught in the high school curriculum. This year, there are about 3,000 students from 170 schools in Minnesota who participate.
Teams attend five competitions throughout the season and are ranked by the amount of points earned during each meet. They are grouped by class and section in order to determine which teams qualify for the State Tournament. The top scoring team in each section, plus a few top scoring wildcard teams within each class, advance to the State Tournament, which is held on the second Monday in March at South St. Paul High School.
After four meets, AHA ranks 3rd out of 60 teams in Class AA and is currently first in the Section 4AA and Tri-Metro Division standings. The team is looking for back-to-back State Tournament appearances with one more strong showing at the final meet on February 10. You can view the full standings below.
In addition, the league recognizes the top performing students in the state throughout the season. After four meets, AHA Senior Sharon Kim currently ranks #16 out of 3000+ students in the overall standings. She is also the #3 ranked female in the state. During her time at AHA, Sharon continues to be one of the top performers in Minnesota.
Good luck to the team as they enter their final meet next week!
