Coming up this weekCOMING UP THIS WEEK

January 28th through February 1st is Catholic Schools Week

National Catholic School Week is sponsored by the NCEA, National Catholic Educational Association. This year's theme is "Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed." AHA will celebrate with special prayers composed by Campus Ministry Team members shared each morning with the student body and an all school mass, which has been rescheduled for  Friday, February 1. Students can be dressed in AHA Spirit Wear. In all Theology classes, students will reflect on how AHA has helped them grow in their faith. Each grade will reflect on a different part of the week's theme, and those responses will be shared as part of the week's celebration.

Sno Daze celebrations have been shifted

Friday, February 1 is a special schedule including mass and pep fest. Students can dress in Spirit Wear.

This year, The Angelus Dance, Saturday, February 2, will kick-off some rescheduled Sno Daze Events.
Enjoy a Comfy Day on Monday, February 4, and a Spirit Day Friday, February 8. February 5, 6, and 7 are uniform days.

Friday, February 8 will end the week with several events:

  • 6pm- Lunar New Year, Commons/Annex
  • 7pm- Basketball, Main Gym
  • 9pm- Stars on Stage, Choir/Band room

Angelus Information

The Angelus Dance is Saturday, February 2, the final event of the Sno Daze week. It is a semi-formal attire event for 10 -12 graders and 9th graders invited by a Holy Angels upper class student. Remember we have expectations regarding dress and dancing. Those who choose not to cooperate will not be allowed to stay. Students may bring dates from other high schools. Banovetz Scholarship apps due Feb 1

Attention current Juniors. Banovetz Scholarship Applications and teacher recommendation forms are now available from Mr. Foley in his office or by email (jfoley@ahastars.org). Copies are also available near the door of the main office. Deadline to submit the application and teacher recommendation form is Feb 1, 2019. Below is more detail about this unique scholarship.

The John D. Banovetz Memorial Scholarship was established in 1993. This scholarship is intended to help a junior student with financial need concentrate on academics and school-related activities rather than work long hours at a job in order to remain at Holy Angels for their senior year. When awarding the scholarship, special consideration may be given to single-parent supported students.

Sophomore Retreats are February 4th and 5th

All sophomores will attend their annual day-long retreat, with half attending each of the days: February 4th and 5th. The retreat is planned by Campus Ministry Team members and will include senior talks, small groups, and fun activities that relate to being God's sacrament in the world. The retreat will be held at Pax Christi Catholic Church, but students will meet at AHA at 7:50am. Sophomores received a permission slip and should turn it in on Friday, February 1st.

NHS Induction ceremony is Feb 6

The NHS (National Honor Society) Induction ceremony is being held on Wednesday, February 6th at 7:30 am in the St. John the Evangelist Chapel. This event is for senior NHS members and for the new junior inductee NHS members. Families of the NHS members and inductees are invited to come and participate in this event. Senior NHS members will be receiving their blue and gold cords in recognition of their membership in NHS which they will wear when they graduate in the spring from AHA. Junior inductees will receive their membership pin.

National Honor Society is a nationally recognized organization whose members are made up of high school students from all over the United States. Students are accepted into the NHS by having the highest qualifications in scholarship, service, character and leadership. At AHA, students are eligible for NHS by first having a cumulative GPA of 3.6667 or above after the 1st trimester of a students' junior year. Students are then evaluated by a faculty committee on the tenants of NHS; service, character, and leadership, before being accepted into NHS. The Seraphine Ireland chapter here at AHA is focused on service back to the community. NHS students hold drop-in tutoring twice a week before school along with one-on-one tutoring of underclassmen. NHS members also serve their community in other ways.

Lunar New Year celebration is Friday, February 8th at 6 pm

Come celebrate Lunar New Year 2019 on Friday, February 8, 6 -8:30 pm in the AHA commons. There will be dinner, games, and fun. All are welcome. Cost is $10 per person for food. RSVP to LJ You with $10 payment by Thursday, Feb. 7th.

College and CareerFROM THE COLLEGE & CAREER CENTER

Junior College Planning Day is Rescheduled to Wednesday, February 13.

Jumpstart Your College Planning Day is a school day devoted to helping AHA juniors get started on the college planning and application process now, so they’re ready when they become seniors. Since the senior year is such a busy, important, and special time for students, getting a head start on college planning will provide a lot of benefits when next fall’s activities get underway. This important event is a requirement for juniors. They should have their laptops charged and with them that day.

The event begins with a presentation in the theater at 8:25 a.m.(We are on a PLC schedule that day.) Throughout the day, juniors will attend a series of sessions about college planning—including what happens when an admission file is reviewed, essay writing, finding a college fit, resume writing, career exploration, and the Family Connection/college search. At the completion of the event, students will receive an assignment to complete a college planning portfolio, which is a requirement that is reflected on a student’s official transcript. The portfolio will now be due on Friday, April 12 at 7:45 a.m. and will be reviewed and returned to students with feedback by the end of the school year. This allows them to make revisions over the summer and begin to apply to colleges before school starts in the fall.

Junior meetings are in full swing

Junior Parents: Junior meetings have begun! The college counselors are enjoying the opportunity to meet with you and your junior to discuss college planning. Our time together is most productive when you and your junior have completed the student and parent surveys ahead of the meeting so we are prepared to discuss the issues most pressing to your family. Thank you in advance for your time! If the letter sent to you in December got lost among the Christmas letters and you are not sure of your meeting date and time, please contact your college counselor right away to find out about your assigned meeting time.

ACT prep classes available

Junior Parents: If you were not able to attend the Practice ACT Score Back session in November, you should have received scores in the mail. There are several ACT Prep Classes available in the coming months. If you are interested in the Sylvan ACT Prep Class, here is a link to information about the course. The Sylvan ACT Prep class taught at Holy Angels is $799. If you are interested in the AHA Test Prep class taught by AHA faculty, the cost is $200 and here is a link to that registration form. Please contact Ms. Kjorstad if you have questions.

Career Speakers needed throughout school year

Parents: Are you interested in sharing your career with AHA students? The College and Career Center hosts career speakers in the CCC January-April. If you would be interested in speaking to interested students in the CCC for a class period, please contact Ms. Kjorstad at akjorstad@ahastars.org and she will get you on the calendar! All juniors must complete an interview with someone in the career field of their interest for the Junior College Planning Portfolios. Your participation is appreciated!!

Transcript request deadlines

Senior Parents: Seniors applying to colleges with a deadline of February 15 need to request their transcripts by January 31st. Remember: It is school policy that we do not submit test scores to colleges. Students need to have their test scores sent to colleges directly from the testing agency. They can request this online through actstudent.org or sat.org. Be aware that many schools are beginning to allow self-reported test scores as part of the admission process. Students should check the websites of their colleges for the policies of each school.

To get a STAR on the CCC Board

Senior Parents: Remind your student to bring in their admission and scholarship letters to their college counselor to get a STAR on the board. We need to know about scholarship awards for Celebration Day in the spring.

Senior grades count

Senior Parents: Please remind your senior that every college admission decision is conditional upon successful completion of high school. The college counselors will be sending a final transcript to the college your son or daughter decides to attend after graduation. Colleges DO review these grade reports and if they note dropped classes or decreased grades, they will and do reconsider admission decisions and in some cases, rescind admission. Any schedule changes for third trimester must first be approved by colleges as students have applied and been accepted to schools with the understanding your student was enrolled in certain classes. Any changes to those classes could also impact their admission decisions. We absolutely believe the work seniors are doing now will help them be prepared for a more successful transition to college in the fall.

SAT deadline

The deadline to register for the March 9 SAT is Friday, February 8. AHA is not a test site for the SAT but students can register and find a test center location at sat.org Please note that the ACT and SAT are accepted at all colleges and while most students take the ACT (which can be taken at Holy Angels) and it is not necessary to take both tests, some students choose to do so.
