Conference registration is open

Trimester 2 parent/teacher conferences are January 24, 2:30-7pm and January 25 from 8am to noon. Registration for conferences is January 7-22. AHA uses an online registration system. To register, go to www.academyofholyangels.org > Parents > Conference Registration. The conference registration system will ask you for a master password, which was in the emailed version of this newsletter. Then, you'll either enter the login that you created when you registered previously, or you'll have the opportunity to create a new login. You will not be using your NetClassroom ID and password for conference registration. If you wish to schedule a meeting during conferences with Ms. Hocks (Learning Variations), please email dhocks@ahastars.org or Mr. Gunderson (RTI) jgunderson@ahastars.org.

Sign up to bring a dessert for parent/teacher conferences

Conference time is approaching and the Parent Association is once again asking families to consider bringing in a dessert for our staff to enjoy during their dinner break at conferences. We are also looking for a host/hostess to help with the event from approximately 4:00 pm- 6:00 pm. Join the Senior Party Committee

Parents- come to a Senior Party Committee meeting and help plan the 2019 Senior Party! The Senior Party is an overnight event for graduating seniors that takes place the night of graduation. Meetings will be held at 6:30 pm in room 2491 at AHA on the following dates: January 15, February 12, and March 12. If you have any questions about the Senior Party or would like to sign up to help but can't attend the meetings, please contact Kelly McHugh Priadka via email (kellykmchugh@gmail.com) or at 612-805-6874.

Basketball Grade School Night is Jan. 12th

Join us for our Basketball Grade School Night this Saturday, January 12th! All grade school students get free admission on 1/12/19 and there will be raffles during halftime of both games. We also encourage all students to wear their school basketball jerseys. Our boys team is 10-1 and off to their best start since 1988.  The girls are 9-2 and currently ranked #3 in the Class AAA State Rankings. Both teams will be hosting Richfield for the Battle of the Tracks Traveling Trophy. Boys tip off at 5:00 PM with the Girls following at 7:00 PM. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday!

Additional Parent Breakfasts - Be part of it!

 

If you didn't attend the Parents Breakfasts that were held this fall, we invite you to join us for an inside look at significant initiatives that are being planned to benefit your child. These multiple projects range in scale from curriculum upgrades to major state-of-the-art renovations. Learn more about how you can help these plans become a reality! 

 

  • January 23rd, 7:30-8:30 AM - this session is for parents of juniors and seniors
  • January 24th, 7:30-8:30 AM - this session is for parents of freshmen and sophomores

AP test cost will be added to TADS billing process this month

This is a reminder that if your son or daughter has an AP class, he/she will be taking an AP test in May. The cost for each test is $60.00 and will be collected via TADS beginning in January. The only exception to the TADS collecting process is for International Students. They must work/pay directly with/to the business office c/o Nancy Cullen (612-798-2615). Nancy's office is in the business area on 2nd floor administrative wing. Collections need to be completed by the end of February for test ordering.

Financial aid and scholarship application process; deadlines for 2019-20

It is time to begin planning for the 2019-20 academic year. If you are applying for need-­based financial aid and/or scholarship opportunities, please note the following process and deadlines:

  • Need-­based Financial Aid: The TADS financial aid website is mytads.com. Please complete the application online by January 15, 2019. Families are required to complete an application each year as your need/circumstances may have changed. Both biological parents are required to fill out a financial aid application. You will have an opportunity to update your tax information in March 2019.
  • Scholarships for Returning Students: In addition to need-­based grants, students may apply for scholarships which are based on financial need and academic achievement, citizenship, and service. To be considered for a scholarship, students must complete the TADS application, the Scholarship application and submit a Teacher Recommendation. Applications are available on our website, under Admissions, under Tuition/Financial Aid, or can be printed here. The deadline to apply for Scholarships is February 1, 2019 . Need a paper copy? Paper copies of the scholarship application and teacher recommendation are available outside the main office. 
  • Scholarships will be considered for students who are registered for classes by February 8, 2019.
  • April 2019: Financial aid/Scholarship letters will be sent to AHA families.Questions about financial aid or scholarships? Contact Nancy Cullen, ncullen@ahastars.org or 612­-798­-2615.

2019-20 course registration process begins now

Parents, your son or daughter will begin the registration process for the 2019-20 school year soon. In order for them to request courses, you must respond to the email you will receive from TADS in January and re-­enroll your student for the 2019-20 school year. This must be completed by January 19, 2019. If you haven't received email from TADS yet, please call them directly at 612-­548-­3320. Counselors will visit classrooms the second week in January to discuss the registration process. Viewable copies of documents will be available on the AHA website in January and emailed out to all parents, including a tutorial on how to request courses online.

Seeking Board of Trustees nominations

Interested in serving on the AHA Board of Trustees, or know of someone else who would be a good candidate?  If so, please email your nomination now to the Board Governance Committee in care of Chuck Knapp or Mike Steinlage. Candidates selected will be asked to serve a three-year term beginning in August 2019.

Class of 2023 application deadline

If you haven't already, now is the time to complete incoming ninth grade applications by our January 19, 2019 first round application deadline. We've mailed home important details about deadlines and timeline dates; please let us know if you haven't received them or have any questions. The 8th grade placement exam is also scheduled for Saturday, January 19, 2019. Please RSVP on our website with our thanks.

One final message: please encourage family, friends, coworkers and neighbors to come to AHA. Bring them along with you to a game so they can see our AHA energy in action. Refer them to Meg Angevine or Joe Berg to schedule a tour and visit with us. We love our future STARS!

Junior meetings are in full swing

Junior Parents: Junior meetings have begun! The college counselors are enjoying the opportunity to meet with you and your junior to discuss college planning. Our time together is most productive when you and your junior have completed the student and parent surveys ahead of the meeting so we are prepared to discuss the issues most pressing to your family. Thank you in advance for your time! If the letter sent to you in December got lost among the Christmas letters and you are not sure of your meeting date and time, please contact your college counselor right away to find out about your assigned meeting time.

Junior College Planning Day is Wednesday, Jan. 30th

Jumpstart Your College Planning Day is a school day devoted to helping AHA juniors get started on the college planning and application process now, so they’re ready when they become seniors. Since the senior year is such a busy, important, and special time for students, getting a head start on college planning will provide a lot of benefits when next fall’s activities get underway. This important event is a requirement for juniors. They should have their laptops charged and with them that day.

The event begins with a presentation in the theater at 8:25 a.m.(We are on a PLC schedule that day.) Throughout the day, juniors will attend a series of sessions about college planning—including what happens when an admission file is reviewed, essay writing, finding a college fit, resume writing, career exploration, and the Family Connection/college search. At the completion of the event, students will receive an assignment to complete a college planning portfolio, which is a requirement that is reflected on a student’s official transcript. The portfolio will be due on Thursday, April 4 at 7:45 a.m. and will be reviewed and returned to students with feedback by the end of the school year. This allows them to make revisions over the summer and begin to apply to colleges before school starts in the fall.

ACT prep classes available

Junior Parents: If you were not able to attend the Practice ACT Score Back session in November, you should have received scores in the mail. There are several ACT Prep Classes available in the coming months. If you are interested in the Sylvan ACT Prep Class, here is a link to information about the course. The Sylvan ACT Prep class taught at Holy Angels is $799. If you are interested in the AHA Test Prep class taught by AHA faculty, the cost is $200 and here is a link to that registration form. Please contact Ms. Kjorstad if you have questions.

Deadline to register for February ACT is Friday!

The deadline to register for the February 9 ACT is Friday, January 11. Students can register online at actstudent.org.   

Transcript request deadlines

Senior Parents: Seniors applying to colleges with a deadline of February 1 need to request their transcripts by January 15. Remember: It is school policy that we do not submit test scores to colleges. Students need to have their test scores sent to colleges directly from the testing agency. They can request this online through actstudent.org or sat.orgBe aware that many schools are beginning to allow self-reported test scores as part of the admission process. Students should check the websites of their colleges for the policies of each school. 

To get a STAR on the CCC Board

Senior Parents: Remind your student to bring in their admission and scholarship letters to their college counselor to get a STAR on the board. We need to know about scholarship awards for Celebration Day in the spring.
