Parent Newsletter from Academy of Holy ★ Angels
Week of December 31, 2018
Dear Friends of Holy Angels,
As the holiday season arrives and Advent unfolds, our attention easily turns to reflecting on the many blessings we possess as members of this wonderful Holy Angels family. During a recent meeting at school, a common sentiment was shared among employees of “how fortunate we are” to work, to teach, to worship and to be stewards and recipients of the many wonders that we experience each day at Holy Angels. We are so grateful for the dedicated work of our talented faculty and staff along with those parents who sacrifice each day to have their student be a part of our mission.
So it is fitting that we share a holiday greeting with you that is heartfelt and wishes only the best for you and your family this holiday season:
“May the Spirit of Christmas
And the echoes of Carols
And the light of the Tree
Bring happiness and joy
To your life and your home”
Have a blessed and happy Christmas Holiday!
Tom Shipley, President

COMING UP THIS WEEK
Christmas Break is Dec. 22nd through Jan 1st
There will be no school beginning on Monday, December 24th and ending on Tuesday, January 1st. School will resume on Wednesday, January 2nd. Building and Office Hours will be modified during this time.
AP Parent meeting on Thurs., Jan. 3 at 7:30 am
At a parent meeting on Thursday, January 3rd at 7:30 am in the annex, Guidance Counselor Matt O'Leary will share information with parents about registering for Advanced Placement courses at AHA. Students considering AP classes should attend the Friday, January 4th meeting in the theater during homeroom and ask for an AP application from the teacher who teaches that class or teaches in the subject area. The deadline for submitting applications is January 18th. Students with further questions about an AP class should talk to the teacher of that class.
Hockey Teams to play at Tria Wild Practice Facility
Come cheer on the STARS Girl's and Boy's Hockey teams on Saturday, December 22nd, 2018, as they become the first boys and girls teams to play at the TRIA WILD Practice facility on the same day! GAME TIMES: Girls JV/V vs. Totino- Grace (12/2pm); Boys JV/V vs SPA & Providence (4/6pm). Click here for the full details.
Beginning on Monday, December 24th, there will be a large crane and dumpster positioned near the main lobby entrance to facilitate the replacement of the side roof areas over the music auditorium in the M building. Car traffic will still be able to pass through as usual but foot traffic will need to navigate around the sidewalk area on the driveway asphalt surface. Drivers will need to pay special attention and deal with slower than usual congestion in this area. At this time we expect this equipment to be removed by Friday, December 28th. Since the school has minimal activity during the Christmas break, we expect this will cause minimal issues.
Boston History & College Tour Enrollment Deadline Extended
You still have time to sign up for the 2019 Boston History & College Tour which will take place next October. The enrollment deadline has been extented until December 31st. If you would like to know more about the tour or have specific questions, please contact Steve Werle (email@example.com) or Ann Kjorstad (firstname.lastname@example.org). It is going to be a wicked fun time!

Trimester One Honor Roll Announced
Academy of Holy Angels is proud to announce the 2018-2019 Trimester One Honor Roll. Students whose grade point average meets one of the following criteria are commended. See the list of criteria, names and honors.
Senior Theology Options
Last week Juniors heard about their Senior Year Theology course options. The first option is a series of courses consisting of Moral Philosophy, Comparative Religions, and Senior Theology Seminar - each providing an excellent college-preparatory foundation for our Senior students. The second, year-long option, is for those wishing to apply to the Campus Ministry Team. This ministry involves Service, Worship, and Pastoral Care through mentoring younger students, and is an important part of our AHA faith community. Last week's presentation included the application process for the Campus Ministry Team. A checklist for this process as well as additional forms and information is available in their Junior Theology class' Google Classroom. We look forward to our Juniors discerning the best academic path for them. Read the Theology course descriptions online in the Program of Studies.

FROM THE COLLEGE & CAREER CENTER
Junior Meetings begin in January
Junior Parents: The college counselors are beginning to work on scheduling junior meetings. These will start in January. Watch your mail early next week amidst the Christmas cards for a letter from Ms. Kjorstad or Mrs. Proctor with your student's assigned meeting date and time. If the time assigned doesn't work, please reach out to us to reschedule. Thank you and Merry Christmas!
Transcript request deadlines
Senior parents: Please remind your senior if they are applying to colleges with a deadline between December 16 and January 15, they should have requested their transcript by December 4. If they have not done this already, they need to see their counselor immediately. The college counselors will be on break December 22-January 1 so any "last minute" requests during the holidays will not be handled until after January 2. Students must plan ahead and get those requests in so the counselors can have everything submitted before leaving for break on December 21st. Remember: It is school policy that we do not submit test scores to colleges. Students need to have their test scores sent to colleges directly from the testing agency. They can request this online through actstudent.org or sat.org. Be aware that many schools are beginning to allow self-reported test scores as part of the admission process. Students should check the websites of their colleges for the policies of each school. Finally, remind your student to bring in their admission and scholarship letters to their college counselor to get a STAR on the board. We need to know about scholarship awards for Celebration Day in the spring.
Senior parents: A word of advice for completing the FAFSA
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now available online at https://fafsa.ed.gov Here are a few tips that may help as you complete the FAFSA:
- One parent and the student must each create a FSA ID. This can be done at the following site:https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/filling-out/fsaid
- STUDENT and PARENT MUST USE DIFFERENT EMAIL ADDRESSES to create your FSA ID. Write your username and password down. When you are completing the FAFSA, this username and password are your FSA ID.
- Complete the FAFSA at https://fafsa.ed.gov/
Next Scholarship Search Workshop is Jan. 9
Senior Parents: The college counselors will be offering the second Scholarship Search Workshop on January 9 at 7:30 am in the CCC. Seniors should sign up ahead of time in the CCC and bring their Chromebooks charged to learn tips about searching for scholarships online and through various resources.
Read the Updated CCC blog
Parents: There is a College and Career Center Blog on the AHA website which we update as we are able with our reviews of colleges we visit, articles we find helpful, etc. We just added a link to the Georgia Tech Admission Blog which recently posted some great information about dealing with defer or deny decisions. Read the CCC Blog.
