COMING UP THIS WEEK
Friday is early dismissal
On Friday, February 23rd, school will be dismissed early, at 1 pm. Buses will begin the afternoon routes at 1:10 pm. On E schedule days, regular hot lunch from Taher is not available. An AHA student group sells pizza from Richfield-based American Pie for $1.50 a slice. Students must pay with cash and are unable to use their school lunch account on these days.
Support the CMT-sponsored Item Drive through Feb 23
AHA's Campus Ministry team is leading an item drive that goes through Feb. 23rd. We are collecting school supplies for Mission Haiti. Students learned about the item drive during convocation on Thursday, February 15th. Please consider supporting our item drive and remind your student to bring in the following items: pens, pencils, white chalk, and zipper pencil cases. Collections will be before school in the lobby from 7:15 am to 7:45 am from February 20th to the 23rd.
AHA Dinner Dance registrations due by Feb 23
It is time for the 19th annual Father/Daughter and Mother/Son dinner dances. This year they will be on Friday March 2 (Father/Daughter) and Saturday March 3(Mother/Son). The dances will be held at the Minneapolis Marriott Southwest (same location as 2017!) Join us for a delicious meal, dancing to great tunes, games, and chatting. For your convenience, this year there is an option to pay online via paypal. Registrations are due by February 23. Get more details and register now for both dances.
Momtini is Friday March 2
It’s not too late to register for Momtini coming up Friday, March 2! If you already registered, encourage a friend to join you! While the Dads are out dancing with the daughters, join a fun group of Holy Angels Moms for drinks and treats from 7:30-10:30 pm. Checks should be made payable to AHA Booster Club with “Momtini" in the memo. Be sure to include your name and email on the envelope. Mail or return to Doris Rothstein in the school spirit store. Contact Missy Youmans at firstname.lastname@example.org with questions. Get the flyer.
Winter band and choral concerts are Sunday, Feb 25th
The Winter Band concert begins at 4 pm in the AHA theater, followed by the Sacred Choral Concert at 5:30 pm in the AHA chapel. The band concert features Holy Angels Concert Band and Academy Jazz Band. The Sacred Choral Concert will include the Concert Choir, Praise Group, and the Academy Singers. Come to both or either concert to enjoy the work of our talented AHA musicians!
Lenten morning Masses began on Feb 21
For your Lenten observance we are offering before school masses on Wednesday mornings in the chapel. Our Chaplain Fr. Mike Tix will be presiding at these liturgies. Masses on PLC schedule days will be at 7:30am and on the other Wednesdays, mass will be at 7:00am.
These masses are a nice way to keep Holy Lent and Open Our Hearts to God. These masses are open to our entire AHA Community; Parents, Students and Staff. Consider joining us in the chapel!
Trimester Two Finals are March 1 and 2
Final Exams for the second trimester are Thursday, March 1st and Friday, March 2nd. Students attend their classes over the course of two days in 65-minute blocks and both days are early release, at 12:50 pm. AHA Lunch is not served on finals days. Students may be out of uniform but appropriate attire is expected. No hats please.
The exam schedule begins with an open period on Thursday, March 1st from 8 am to 9:05 am so that students can have additional study time. After the open period on Thursday, periods 1, 2 and 3 meet. On Friday, March 2nd, the 4th period exam begins at 8 am, followed by periods 5, 6, and 7. Study halls do not meet on exam days.
Encourage your student to take advantage of Tutoring
NHS (National Honor Society) holds weekly drop-in tutoring sessions for any student at AHA. The sessions are held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:15-7:45 am in the LaRock room, which is connected to the library. Students can drop by and ask questions about a homework assignment, a specific concept from a class, or to get a paper proofread. No appointments are needed, the tutors (who are senior NHS members) are there waiting to answer questions. Just look for the signs saying NHS tutoring. Questions? Please contact Lindsay Stone at email@example.com for more information.
Order Spring Sports Team Apparel, Team Sweatshirts and Fan Apparel
Our online apparel site for Spring Sports is now open. Go to https://ahaspring18.itemorder.com to place your order. Scroll down to your specific team and select your items. In addition to team apparel, you will also see many items from our Spirit Store. After you have completed the checkout process, you will receive a confirmation email receipt. If you do not receive this receipt, your order has not been placed. All orders will be delivered to Holy Angels. Team Coaches will distribute the orders to team members. Several of the team sites also have mandatory practice apparel. We encourage you to order now to make sure you are set when Spring practice begins.
WE WANT YOU TO KNOW
Please participate in the Catholic Services Appeal
Dear Parents and Friends, The Catholic Services Appeal funds $800,000 annually in need-based scholarships to Catholic High Schools, including Academy of Holy Angels. In 2017, we received $61,250 from the Appeal. Please watch for the 2018 ask and do all you can to support the CSAF. Thank you from AHA President Tom Shipley.
Summer Experience registration open
Register your middle-school child for Summer Experience! AHA offers a variety of camps hosted by Holy Angels staff and coaches where students are taught the basics in a challenging but supportive environment. From football to dance to theater, there is something for every student. Camps are held June 11-14, 18-21, and 25-28. Most camps are two hours long, four days a week. Cost is $100 and geared primarily for grades 6,7 and 8, but there are some exceptions. Get more information and register now.
Starfest: Tickets Now Available!
Tickets are now available online for individual or full table options. Join us on Saturday, April 28th for an exciting and refreshed Starfest 2018: Havana Nights! For those new to AHA, Starfest is our school's largest annual fundraiser and we encourage all parents to attend. You will be sure to have a great time, meet other parents, and support our students. The event features food catered by The Saint Paul Hotel, silent and live auctions, live music, and more! Stay tuned for more details or get tickets now.
AHA's Medication Policy
We'd like to remind parents that students should not be carrying medication in their backpack when they come to school. This is especially critical when talking about prescription medications and in particular, controlled narcotics such as Adderall or Ritalin. If a student is found to be carrying controlled narcotics, they could be suspended or expelled from school. ALL medication taken during school hours should be dispensed out of the Health Office. The school does not maintain a supply of any medications at school. If you have questions, please contact School Nurse Jan Nordstrom. Read the entire policy in the Student and Parent Handbook.
Senior Poster Information
Class of 2018 Parents: AHA has a long-standing tradition of celebrating each senior by displaying a poster of each student. The poster usually captures favorite memories from childhood, school days and/or family times in a collage format. The posters will be on display at the reception following the Baccalaureate Mass on May 30th and completed, laminated posters should be dropped off at the school by May 25th, 2018. Get more details.
Driver Education Classes at AHA to start in April
The spring classroom driver education session dates are April 3 – April 24. Classes are held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights 3:00 – 6:15 p.m. in Room 2497. AAA has a comprehensive teen driver education program that includes: Classroom, Parent/Guardian Night, Driver Impact Panel and Behind-the-Wheel Lessons. Students receive an AAA How to Drive Textbook and the Minnesota Driving Manual.
Already enrolled at AAA Driving School and ready for Behind-the-Wheel Lessons? We have opened daytime lessons for February 16 and AHA spring break dates in addition to our regular after school and weekend lesson times. Looking for an after school pickup at Holy Angels? Please call our office to make arrangements or you can schedule directly via the online Student Portal https://www.myeform3.net/AAAMN/Student/StudentLogin.aspx .
Should novice students be driving in the winter weather? Yes. If a student currently has a permit, chances are they will be driving alone with a provisional license next winter. Practice this winter with a supervising adult driver or a driving school instructor is great preparation. Given the continuing winter weather, AAA is incorporating adverse condition and winter weather driving tips into all lessons.
For more information about AAA Driving School programing, or to register for classes, call (952) 927-2602 or visit aaa.com/drivingschool For residents outside of Hennepin County, use zip code 55416 to access the AAA Minneapolis website.

FROM THE COLLEGE & CAREER CENTER
Senior grades count
Senior Parents: Please remind your senior that every college admission decision is conditional upon successful completion of high school. The college counselors will be sending a final transcript to the college your son or daughter decides to attend after graduation. Colleges DO review these grade reports and if they note dropped classes or decreased grades, they will absolutely reconsider admission decisions and in some cases, rescind admission. We absolutely believe the work seniors are doing now will help them be prepared for a successful transition to college in the fall.
A word about "Honor Programs"
Your student may receive invitations to attend "Honors or Leadership" programs in the summer from outside companies via mail or email. Holy Angels does not release student information to outside organizations- many of these companies purchase student names from testing agencies. While these companies and their programs are usually legitimate, the cost to attend their programs is usually quite
high. Please know that attending these type of programs or becoming a member of an outside "Honor" program for a fee will not make your student more competitive for college admission. As always, if you have questions, contact Ms. Kjorstad or Mrs. Proctor.
Junior College Planning Day Assignments due April 4
During College Planning Day on Wednesday, January 31, the junior class heard from a variety of college speakers and a career panel of Holy Angels alums. Juniors also received information about their Junior College Portfolio Assignment which is due on Wednesday, April 4 at 8:20 a.m.(this is a PLC day). Completed portfolios will include:
- a College Application Preparation Worksheet
- a completed College Application
- College Essay, typed, 650 word limit
- an Activities Resume
- a College search printout and an information page on one college.
- a Job Shadow/Interview completed and a half page summary typed on "Would I want to pursue this career, why or why not?"
Completion of the portfolio will be indicated on student transcripts. Any portfolio turned in after April 4 at 8:20 a.m. will be considered late and therefore permanently listed as "incomplete" on the transcript.
Junior Meetings are in Full Swing
Junior Parents: Junior Meetings have begun! The College Counselors are enjoying the opportunity to meet with you and your junior to discuss college planning. Our time together is most productive when you and your junior have completed the student and parent surveys ahead of the meeting so we are prepared to discuss the issues most pressing to your family. Thank you in advance for your time! If the letter sent to you in December got lost among the Christmas letters and you are not sure of your meeting date and time, please contact your college counselor right away to find out about your assigned meeting time.
ACT Prep Classes available
Junior Parents: If you were not able to attend the Practice ACT Score Back session on in November, you should have received scores in the mail. There are several ACT Prep Classes available in the coming months. If you are interested in the Sylvan ACT Prep Class, here is the link to the schedule and courses offered. The Sylvan ACT Prep class taught at Holy Angels is $799. If you are interested in the AHA Test Prep class taught by AHA faculty, the cost is $200 and here is a link to the registration form. Please contact Ms. Kjorstad if you have questions.
To get a STAR on the CCC board
Senior Parents: Remind your student to bring in their admission and scholarship letters to their college counselor to get a STAR on the board. We need to know about scholarship awards for Celebration Day in the spring.
