Jim Gunderson Named Coach of the Year

Congratulations to AHA head football coach Jim Gunderson who was named the State Class AAAA Coach of the Year. The award is given by the Minnesota Football Coaches Association to the top coach for each of the MSHSL's seven classes of football.  Last month, Coach Gunderson also received honors as Alumni Coach of the Year for Augsburg College.

Coach Gunderson is 22-10 as head coach of Academy of Holy Angels' football program and his .688 winning percentage is higher than any coach in AHA football history.  During his three years, AHA has been Section Runner up in 2016, Section Champion 2017, and State Class AAAA Champion 2017.

Since Coach Gunderson's arrival in 2011 as Associate Head Coach, the program is 57-29 for a .648 winning percentage.  They have 2 Conference Championships (2012, 2014), 2 Section Runner-Ups (2012, 2016), 3 Section Championships (2013, 2014, 2017), 1 State Quarterfinal Finish (2014), 1 State Runner Up (2013), and 1 State Championship (2017).  The team has qualified for State 3 of the past 5 years.

In addition, Coach Gunderson is the coordinator of the school's Faith in Action program which helps incorporate faith, service and leadership development into the AHA athletic teams. 

Coach Gunderson is eligible to also be named the State Coach of the Year for the entire state which will be given at the State Football Coaches Association banquet to be held the first weekend of April.
