College and CareerFROM THE COLLEGE & CAREER CENTER

Junior Meetings

The College Counselors have met with about half of the juniors so far in individual junior meetings since early January. Letters were sent home in December with the assigned time for your student. If you are not sure when your meeting is, please contact your child's college counselor. If the time assigned does not work, please email your student's counselor immediately and we will work to reschedule. Students with last names starting with A-L work with Ms. Kjorstad and she can be reached at 612-798-2691 or by email at akjorstad@ahastars.org. Students with last names M-Z work with Mrs. Proctor and she can be reached at 612-798-2639 or by email at tproctor@ahastars.org. We look forward to meeting with your junior soon!

A word about "Honor Programs"

Your student may receive invitations to attend "Honors or Leadership" programs in the summer from outside companies via mail or email. Holy Angels does not release student information to outside organizations--many of these companies purchase student names from testing agencies. While these companies and their programs are usually legitimate, the cost to attend their programs is usually quite high. Please know that attending these type of programs or becoming a member of an outside "Honor" program for a fee will not make your student more competitive for college admission. As always, if you have questions, contact Ms. Kjorstad or Mrs. Proctor.

Junior College Portfolio Assignment

During College Planning Day on Wednesday, February 1, the junior class heard from a variety of college speakers and a career panel of Holy Angels alums. Juniors also received information about their Junior College Portfolio Assignment which is due on Wednesday, April 26 at 7:45 a.m. Completed portfolios will include:

  • a formal activities resume
  • a college search sort
  • a copy of the Do What You Are career inventory
  • a completed college application or scholarship application
  • a summary of a career informational interview or job shadow and short reflection.
  • a college essay

Completion of the portfolio will be indicated on student transcripts. Any portfolio turned in after April 26 at 7:45 a.m. will be considered late and therefore permanently listed as "incomplete" on the transcript.

ACT Prep Classes Offered

Juniors interested in taking ACT prep classes at Holy Angels have several options this winter/spring. Sylvan will be teaching a 12-hour Advanced Reading Seminar which is a speed reading and comprehension course at Holy Angels in January for $199. Sylvan is also offering a 24-hour ACT prep class at Holy Angels starting in February which will prepare students for taking the ACT in April for $799. Both Sylvan courses offer financial assistance for families receiving financial aid to attend Holy Angels. If you receive financial aid for Holy Angels, contact Mrs. Foley at hfoley@ahastars.org if you want to be considered for financial assistance for the Sylvan class. She will confirm for Sylvan the percentage discount you receive at Holy Angels and Sylvan will discount the cost of their class accordingly.

Worried your student doesn't have time for the Sylvan course? Holy Angels offers an ACT prep class before the April test date for $200 which is offered over 2 Saturdays. Get registration forms.
