Richfield,MN – B.J. Etzold will be the new Holy Angels Head Boy’s Basketball Coach starting in the winter of 2016-2017. The appointment will not come as a surprise to many in the Holy Angels Community. As an AHA Assistant Coach and Math Teacher, Coach Etzold has the reputation for his dedication and commitment to the team, the sport of basketball, and student development as a whole. “It’s a dream come true. I am very honored and humbled by the opportunity to lead our boys’ basketball program. The entire community at Holy Angels ranging from the staff and faculty to the students and alumni feels like one big family,” said Coach Etzold.
Coach Etzold has a history of success, both on the field and behind the whistle. He led his high school team to the State Championship game in both football and basketball his senior year, playing quarterback and guard, respectively. He played wide receiver for Jamestown College in North Dakota. Coach Etzold went on to coach basketball and football after school, and committed his efforts to basketball. During his years of coaching high school players, his philosophy of coaching reaches much farther than court boundaries. “Hopefully, I can continue to develop boys into become men of faith character and a diligence the same way Coach Foley has done during his tenure and build some excitement around a program that I think is heading in the right direction. It’s going to take a lot of hard work to get there, but with the investment of our coaching staff, players, and their parents, and the entire school community, I believe that it can be accomplished, so I am excited to get started,” Coach Etzold said.
Coach Etzold has already started on his goal of forming our students into solid young men and women. He started his first year of teaching math at Academy of Holy Angels, where he has used his “flipped classroom” to great effect. Athletic Director Michael Kautzman knows that Coach Etzold is just the right fit for the job. “I look forward to working with Coach Etzold as he moves into his new role as head basketball coach. I am confident in his skills as a teacher-coach and know that he will continue to build a winning culture where our student-athletes become great team players while also learning how to become strong and confident young men of character," Kautzman said.
Coach Etzold and his wife Jenna, just welcomed their first son into their family, and reside in Richfield. If you have any questions, please contact Michael Kautzman at 612-798-2634.
